Epiphyllum guatemalense montrose grown from seed. This plant blooms frequently from early spring to late summer, each flower only lasts a few hours over night, however flowers are self-pollinating. It produces relatively large amounts of fruit per plant (10 to 30+ fruit on mid-sized plant) once mature. Fruit are about the size of a clementine and should be picked once they are red and soft. They have a taste reminiscent of grapes and passion fruit. They go well with salad. Flowers grow on long "stalks" and are relatively small (2 inches wide), with a very weak scent.

Given right conditions it is a fast grower. It is very moisture tolerant, however like all tropical cacti still prefers a loamy, well-draining soil. We recommend providing it with mild fertilizer during and after its fruiting season. As its name indicates is native to Guatemala and elsewhere in Mesoamerica.

  • Plants may appear wrinkled upon arrival, this is normal, plants are just dehydrated due to shipping and will "plump up" in time. All plants are greenhouse grown and are pest free, however due to this plants must be eased into direct sunlight over several days, otherwise plants will sunburn. Use well draining soil. Plants cannot sit in water, but prefer regular watering once every 9 days. Plants are not cold hardy and must be brought indoors should temperature drop below 32°F (0°C). Between December and March plants ship insulated in packing paper and a mylar heat blanket to protect against extremes.
